Crushing darkness, a deep feeling of confinement, and cold, so cold. Suffocation.
My eyes snapped open and I was gasping for air. Had I been holding my breath? I was still cold but the confinement was gone, I was freed. It was oddly bright where I lay and I concluded that I must be dead. Either Phillipe or Phione had caught me, or the frozen lake succeeded in swallowing me up. Judging by the dull ache in my entire body, it really could have gone either way.
My vision cleared to reveal that I was not dead, but in fact dry and seemingly safe in a small burrow or cave. I could not be sure how I got here, and did not even remember leaving the water's icy grip. The thought that I was without information made me worry, and I began to bristle with unease. I was alive but not necessarily safe. Phillipe was a sick animal, torture was not out of his realm of possibilities.
Shaking slightly, I got to my feet, shook out my coat and began looking around. The burrow was large, originally dug out by a badger, bu now seemed abandoned. It smelled of canine, but not anyone I recognized, though it was hard to small, as cold as was.
I was sure to be sick from my encounter with the lake. One did not enter a frozen body of water and return unscathed. I sniffled, my puppy nose already clogged up, my throat beginning to feel sore. A sigh escaped me as I returned to the spot where I had awoken and lay back down. I was far to young to be in such a predicament.
